Argument-stretching: (slightly) invalid political arguments and their effects on public opinion

چکیده
Abstract To stretch an argument means to make a political that is slightly (but not glaringly) invalid. I add existing research, which focuses on the analysis of facts and stark binary views validity by introducing concept argument-stretching, identifies subtle violations arguments. Using this conceptual foundation, outline impression-formation theory explain impact argument-stretching public opinion. suggest people spontaneously form negative impressions stretched arguments, they these cumulative tally satisfaction with argument. Finally, translate effect their account into reduced support for politician who policy justified it. confirm hypothesized direct effects in three experimental studies, also find evidence mediating satisfaction.
